Design Jargon of the Day: Bleed

When making a design where colour (anything but C0 M0 Y0 K0) goes right to the edges of your paper, you need to add bleed. Bleed is an extra (typically) 3mm border around the perimeter of the canvas/artboard/page, which is added to ensure that when your design is printed, any small shift by the printer or paper will not result in blank areas on the final output.

Often times when designing for physical spaces (eg. retail signage, documents, posters, point of sale displays etc) clients want to see what your design looks like in context of its intended environment. The mock up of your flat design in context is known as an in situ (in situation).

Design Jargon of the Day: Keyline

Also known as a stroke (such as in Adobe CS), a keyline is a border that sits directly around the outer edges of a graphic element. Keylines are often used to make a word or shape ‘pop out’ from a background, particularly when the graphic element itself is similar in colour to the background on which it sits.
