Design Jargon of the Day: In Situ

Often times when designing for physical spaces (eg. retail signage, documents, posters, point of sale displays etc) clients want to see what your design looks like in context of its intended environment. The mock up of your flat design in context is known as an in situ (in situation).

In situs are also pretty wildly popular when it comes to digital design too. I’m sure you’ve seen many a portfolio or website where digital work is displayed within an Apple Cinema Display – digital design in context of its natural environment on screen.

Even when a client does not request an in situ, it is highly recommended to provide one. Think: you may avoid countless revisions simply by implanting in your client’s mind that your design is considered enough to warrant an in situ.
